{"id":1869,"date":"2020-10-23T07:51:42","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T07:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/learnnutrition.gr\/?p=1869"},"modified":"2022-06-14T15:06:09","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T15:06:09","slug":"threptiki-pyknotita-trofwn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/learnnutrition.gr\/en\/threptiki-pyknotita-trofwn\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the nutrient density of foods?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 18pt;\">Definition of nutrient density.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Nutrient density is the sum of nutrients a food contains in proportion to its calories.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when a food has a substantial concentration of different nutrients (e.g., vitamins, minerals, proteins) and is also low in calories, we note that this food has an increased nutrient density (i.e., it offers enhanced nutrition with a minimum amount of calories).<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 18pt;\">The nutrient density of some foods:<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 14pt;\">Olives-Olive oil.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Olive oil is perhaps a characteristic example where a decrease in the nutrient density of the actual food (olive) occurs during the production process.<br \/>\nSeparating the olive's lipidic phase removes the solid and water-soluble components, resulting in an adverse change in the final concentration of many minerals and water-soluble vitamins.<br \/>\nThus, although initially, ten medium olives could supply us with 0.6g. fiber, 2.5mg Iron, 35mg Calcium, and 0.3g. protein, these concentrations in the produced olive oil are nearly negligible.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Sugar-Raisins.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to its zero nutritional value, sugar can burden our bodies with unnecessary calories. For example, if we decided to add 100gr. of raisins instead of 100gr. of sugar in any recipe, we would obtain substantial concentrations of Iron, Potassium, and Copper instead of the nearly zero concentration of these minerals in processed sugar.\n In this instance, we can state that raisins have a higher nutrient density than processed sugar.<br \/>\n\u03a3\u03b5 \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1 \u03bf\u03b9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c6\u03af\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u03ce\u03c2 \u03c5\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03cd\u03bd \u03c3\u03b5 \u03b8\u03c1\u03b5\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03c0\u03c5\u03ba\u03bd\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1 \u03c3\u03b5 \u03c3\u03cd\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b7 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b5\u03c0\u03b5\u03be\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7 \u03b6\u03ac\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b7.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Lettuce, or kale.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The humble lettuce is a misunderstood vegetable with increased nutrient density. Specifically, due to its low anti-nutrient content (its low concentration of phytic acid), it contains fully absorbable minerals such as Calcium, Iron, and Magnesium. Furthermore, it can also be a rich source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ALA).<\/p>\n<p>The nutritional value of kale has become well known nowadays. Due to its low oxalic acid concentration, its mineral content is more bioavailable. Specifically, a biochemical study reveals that its high intestinal absorption of Calcium exceeds that of animal milk.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 18pt;\">Is energy density an ultimate goal for everyone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1874 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/learnnutrition.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/quino-al-rN78O6UgdkE-unsplash-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" title=\"\">Finally, it should be noted that achieving the nutrient density of foods shouldn't be a conscious concern for all of us.<br \/>\nFor example, marathon athletes who may consume 5000-7000 calories daily for their training are not particularly interested in reaching a high nutrient density in their meals.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they mainly desire a high energy density, i.e., high-calorie foods with plenty of carbohydrates (such as fruits, juices, and energy drinks), to replenish their lost glycogen stores and fulfill their potential athletic goals.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size:
